Achieving goals
This page brings together the key ideas and links to my articles about achieving goals. Explore these insights to learn how to set clear goals, stay motivated, and handle obstacles along the way. These articles offer straightforward strategies to help you make real progress and turn your ambitions into reality.
Achieving goals is about taking practical steps that move you forward. A great place to start is by setting clear, specific goals that feel achievable. The more defined your goal, the easier it is to stay focused and motivated. Breaking big goals into smaller, manageable steps also makes them less overwhelming and helps you track progress along the way.
Sticking with your goals is just as important as setting them. That often means building habits and routines that support what you're working toward. Maybe it’s carving out dedicated time each day, creating a supportive environment, or simply staying patient when things don’t go as planned. Setbacks will happen, but they don’t mean failure—they’re just part of the process. Keep going, adjust when needed, and you’ll be surprised at what you can accomplish.

🔗 Mastering personal goal setting
Before working toward a goal, make sure it’s clear and gives you a sense of direction. Many people struggle to reach their goals because they aren’t specific enough, don’t have a strong reason behind them, or aren’t ready to make the necessary changes.
Think ahead about the obstacles you might face while working toward your goal. Once you’ve identified them, decide how you’ll handle them if they come up. A simple way to stay on track is to create an "If-Then" plan: If [obstacle happens], then [my response]. This helps you prepare in advance so challenges don’t catch you off guard.
🔗 Determine the kind of person you want to be
The way we see ourselves can make change harder. If a new habit doesn’t match our current identity, it can feel unnatural to stick with it. Lasting change becomes easier when we start seeing ourselves as the kind of person who does the things we want to do.
Getting started can be hard because of mental roadblocks like low motivation, fear of failure, or self-doubt. The key is to start small—make your next step so simple that it takes little effort and is easy to succeed at.
Goals give you direction, focus your attention, and motivate action. They also help you plan and track progress. But reaching a goal isn’t just about setting it—you need a system to reach it. A system is a series of steps or methods you follow to make progress. Goals set the destination, but your system determines how far you get. Once you’ve set a goal, focus on the process that will get you there.
The Be-Do-Have model is a framework for personal growth and goal setting. It highlights the importance of first becoming the kind of person who naturally does what’s needed to reach your goals (Be). This shift in mindset shapes your actions (Do), which ultimately leads to the results you want (Have).
Life design is all about taking action. Your previous work matters only if you do something with the results. To achieve your design goal, focus on building the life path you’ve chosen and becoming more like the person you want to be.
